Changed My Life At 84.
Ken Downend was falling a lot during the summer of 2006. Like many older people, Ken just thought it
was part of the aging process. His doctor knew better and referred him to the Elks Hearing & Balance Center.
Ken had a strong connection with the Center as a past Board Member of the Elks Rehab Hospital, volunteer and
hearing aid user! Under the care of Gayle Hynes, a certified Vestibular Physical Therapist, Ken was diagnosed
with a very treatable form of vertigo, called BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo). After a few
treatments, he says his life was changed! "I no longer had to hold on to furniture and chairs to get from the bed
to the bathroom, and I could get dressed standing in the middle of the room. My Golden Years will be
much more golden!"

Joe Caroselli has worked for over 30 years caring for patients, as a Physical Therapist, and caring for
those who care for patients, as the CEO of the Elks Rehab Hospital. In 2007, Joe became a patient. For
five months, up to five times a day, he quietly suffered extreme dizziness. Rooms spun and waves of
nausea made Joe fear that his life would never be the same. Medications didn't help and he lost hope.
Finally, he turned to the Elks Hearing & Balance Center. Stephen Price, Physical
Therapist, diagnosed Joe with BPPV, a very treatable form of vertigo. This common condition occurs
when calcium crystals in the ear canal are displaced, caused dizziness and other side effects. After
one treatment, Joe proclaimed, "I'm back baby!" and went home to pick up his grandson, without fear of
falling, for the first time in months.

Brothers John and Dick didn't think they had a hearing problem. But their wives knew differently!
As is often the case, family and friends noticed that the brothers were "missing out on conversations"
and the men even admitted "I didn't hear that!" Finally, one day at the store, John ran into an old
friend who had been fitted for hearing aids at the Elks Hearing & Balance Center. John made an
appointment. Things worked out so well for him, he told his brother Dick. Dick has now been fitted
with state-of-the-art dot.TM by ReSound hearing aids and his wife says it makes all the difference.

Due to a hereditary condition, Karen’s world started getting quieter and quieter when she was only 50.
She was forced to retire from her job and retreated into her “own quiet world.” But at age 56, her
doctor advised her to see an experienced audiologist in her new hometown of Ontario, Oregon. She
chose Christine Wallace of the Elks Hearing & Balance Center(formerly Ontario Audiology). She was fitted
with hearing aids that she puts in the minute she gets up and takes them off right before bed. She says
the highlight of her new life was the first time she heard her 7 year old granddaughter Ayla say to her
on the phone, “Grammie, I love you!”

Carol works as a cook in a pre-school. She became concerned that she was having difficulty understanding
the children. Deciphering speech was getting harder and harder. She told her doctor that she wanted the
“best service for her money” so he referred her to the Elks Hearing and Balance Center and she met with
Paul Lancaster, Doctor of Audiology. Paul fitted Carol with two behind-the-ear hearing aids with the
latest technology. “I can’t believe how much I was missing. I hear things I haven’t heard in forever!”
Carol says, “Everybody at the office in Nampa are like old friends.

Thelma was dizzy, losing weight and often sick to her stomach. She seldom drove and quit going to her
weekly exercise classes at the Nampa Senior Center. She steadied herself by moving from wall to wall.
Her doctor referred her to the Hearing and Balance Centers at the Elks. Carmen, her Physical Therapist
recognized that Thelma was suffering from a vestibular disorder and utilized specific treatment and
exercises to significantly resolve the symptoms. Now that Thelma has her life back, she’s smiling
again (and riding a motor scooter)!

For the past six years Laurel was afraid to go out in public because she was always falling and
embarrassed by her inability to keep her balance. Her condition went undiagnosed and she was often
in a wheelchair. One day after literally toppling over, a medical professional referred Laurel to
Dayna Olson, a physical therapist at the Elks Hearing & Balance Center. Dayna performed a quick test
and determined that Laurel had a highly treatable vestibular disorder. After one treatment, Laurel
said she “felt like running across the room!”
